   You need to install Spatial Analyst extension and then:
   - In your view Click on File > Import data Source
   - Select ASCII Raster
   - Select your ASCII file (downloaded from links above)
   - Select a new GRID file format output
   - You can either select YES or NO when it asks whether you want to convert cell value as integer.
   - Wait until the grid is fully loaded. I strongly advice you don’t click on on ArcView while it is on its busy time. It is going to be mad.

   Can you explain how the format ’srtm_55_11′ i.e the ‘55_11′ part corresponds to Lat and Long?

   Mark T,

   For longitude, it has similar system with UTM. The difference is UTM has 6 degrees interval while SRTM mosaic has 5 degrees. It starts from 180 W moving eastward with 5 degrees each segment (number). So, 120 E is the beginning of zone 61 of SRTM mosaic.

   I am not sure about the latitude numbering system. I think it starts from 60 North, going southward with 5 degrees interval. So, meridian is the beginning of zone 13 of SRTM mosaic.

   Saya coba buka di Global Mapper ver 9.0 tp kok type filenya nggak dikenalin disana ya…..

   Terus dengan software remote sensing apa data ini bisa digunakan ? Terimakasih sebelumnya

   Thank you for the SRTM ver 4 download link,…. Normally i used global mapper as raster processing for previous version of SRTM. But global Mapper doesn’t support the SRTM ver 4 (*.ASC). So how to open the SRTM ver 4, consider to create contur line or 3D view…..

   I have no idea why GlobalMapper can not open it. I think ASCII is very old and common format. I can open ASCII using ArcView and ArcGIS. You can try to use those softwares and convert to the format GlobalMapper want.

    Thank you for SRTM v 4 but I can’t opened in Ermapper v.7, format ascii in ermaper can’t read so must to convert to ers (format ermaper. Now I want to question, how to convert ascii format to ers format??

    The emergence response:
    - You can download the TIF version
    - User another software such as Global Mapper to convert ASCII into Ermapper format

    We will find out soon how Ermapper directly open SRTM ASCII format

    Izin Bertanya Om, dari newbi ni… sy sudah menjalankan cara untuk membuka file ASC sebagaimana tersebut diatas dengan arcview 3.2 +spatial analist ketika sudah memilih out pout format maka ada dilaog bos YES dan NO, sy sudah coba dua2nya dan hasilnya adalah : GRD ERROR – syntax error or near symbol,,INT) kira2 apa masalahnya Om, tks sebelumnya …

    Asep,
    Masalah terletak pada nama folder yang memiliki SPASI. Misalnya nama folder tempat menyimpan file ASC adalah R:\Downloads\data jabar\srtm
    Folder tersebut tidak valid karena memiliki spasi, hilangkan spasi menjadi R:\Downloads\data_jabar\srtm

    Other files have similar changes.

    Salam Dahsyat,,
    Salah seorang teman (Mas Irwan namanya) di milis rsgisforum memberitahukan bahwa:

    Bagi yang terbiasa menggunakan data batimetri atau topografi untuk analisis.
    Mungkin bisa mencoba menggunakan data SRTM30plus yang baru
    di publish desember 2009 lalu.

    Kelebihan srtm30 yaitu menggabungkan data srtm untuk topografi
    (sekarang sudah versi 4, 3sec) dan data batimetri yang di improve dari
    data lama etopo2 atau gebco berdasarkan pengamatan baru.

    Sy sudah coba untuk wilayah sekitar sulawesi terlihat ada improvement yg
    sangat signifikan di sekitar selat makassar. Dan untuk jawa, di selatan
    jawa beberapa feature yang tdk terlihat dari data lama, pada data
    terbaru ini terlihat lebih jelas. Terutama disekitar selat sunda.
    Sy rasa data ini sudah sangat baik untuk analisis area yang luas.
    semoga ada manfaatnya.
