CarryMap is an ArcGIS extension which can export our ArcMap MXD project into single executable file (EXE). This extension is designed for presentation, sharing our GIS with non-technical people, or in order to protect our data. There are two resulted EXE types; (1) 32-bit Desktop, and (2) CE for PDA (Windows Mobile Platform)
The picture above is an example of GIS interface compiled by CarryMap from an MXD project in Banjarbaru City of Indonesia. Here are the steps.
- Download CarryMap. Please buy it at http://www.dataeast.com/en/CarryMap.asp or googling.
- Install the extension. (We assume that you are master on it)
- Open ArcGIS

Actiavate the CarryMap toolbar.
Create/open an MXD project and make it ready to be distributed. Remote unwanted layers, rename the layer’s names, set the zoom/extent (in case if you want to use extent for clipping, later on).
- Run the CarryMap

Choose Advance Mode (just one example). Click on NEXT >

Set By Current Extent (or you can choose by selected graphics, or by selected feature(s) in layer. Click Next >

Fill the form as follow. Please modify by yourself.

Set the output: filename and output location. Tic on Create PDA version if you want to create one. Click on NEXT >

Set the SKIN and Logo (if you wish). Click NEXT >

Set Map Availability if you want to set an expired date. After the expired date, the resulted EXE can not render map anymore. Fill the password (if you wish). In this case we use gistutorial as password. Click NEXT >

Set Searching Form. The example below shows you one searching form on [Pemukiman] layer.
It is not complete yet. We need to set the FIELDS. Click on FIELDS (Collection)

Set FIELDS. We have to know about the attribute of our data. In this example, we use TOPONIMI2 for searching because the field contain urban’s name.

Clik OK and NEXT >

Setting is ready. Click CONVERT to run the compilation.

Let the process is running for few seconds. It may take about ten seconds or more. The message below will pop up after the process is done. Just select CLOSE.

In the folder we filled in (Step 9), we will have these two files

CE file can be used only on PDA

Try to run kota_banjarbaru.exe. Enter the password gistutorial

Test searching facility by typing some known string (left side).

Here are some tools in compiled EXE file.
- Identify Tool
- Navigation : Pan, zoom in, zoom out, full extent
- Measure
- Print
- GPS (never tested yet)
- Language (never tested yet)
The resultant files can be sent by email or copied into flashdisk. It is simple and easy. Ordinary user will easily explore our GIS without painfull ArcGIS interface. One example of compiled EXE map can be downloaded at the link below.
