How to Install DLL Extensions in ArcGIS?

ArcGIS has capability to incorporate some additional function called Extensions. ESRI user may search and download extensions they need in ArcGIS Resources, mostly they are free. Unfortunately, in most cases, GIS practitioners often facing difficulties in installing ArcGIS Extension. In this tutorial, we discus how to add extension in DLL format.

  1. Open ArcMap (9.x atau 10.x). For Windows 7 users, we need to run the ArcMap in Administrator mode as shown in the following figure.

  2. Find Customize menu oar Customize Mode

In ArcGIS 9.x, customize is located in  Tools menu > Customize

In ArcGIS 10.x, customize is located in Customize menu > Customize Mode (shown in the following figure)

  3. Check whether installed extension has been in Toolbars tab? In some cases even if we have installed the extension using installer, we still need to add its DLL into ArcGIS.
  4. Select COMMANDS tab

Check whether the extension has been already in Commands tab? If the extension is not already there, Click on Add from file …

  5. Fine the DLL file. The following example is adding repeate_shapes.dll into ArcMap. Even the extention was installed correctly using its intaller, we still need to add the DLL manually.

    Select repeate_shapes.dll and Click OPEN

  6. Drag the command into available group.

Done.
