GIS helps people doing land survey design. The survey design depends on the shape of the plot and constellations (distance, position, etc). One of land survey design application which are commonly done by land owner is circle sampling with systematic distance. How to do that in ArcGIS? The following tutorial give us an example how to use Repeating Shapes extension to do that job.
- Download Repeating Shapes for ArcGIS extension (Just googling or follow the download button in the bottom of this post)
- Install the extension. Let everything by default. Just select Next or Yes.
- Open ArcMap
-
Go to Customize Mode by Clik on Customize menu > Customize Mode

-
Select COMMANDS tab. The Jennesss Enterprise category should be there.

-
If it is not the case, Click on Add from file…

Find the repeat-shapes.dll file (C:\Program Files\Jennessent\repeating_shapes. Tambahkan file repeat_shapes.dll)
NOTE: For Windows 7 user, you need to run ArcMAP as ADMINISTRATOR before doing this step.
-
Drag-n-drop the Repeating Shapes command to any available toolbar.

Case 1: Rectangle Desain Survey
-
Prepare some data, especially the study area [lokasi] as shown in the following image

- Run the Repeating Shape tool
-
Select EXTENT. We will select study area [lokasi] as the extent. Select within the extent of a particular layer as shown in the following image.

Clik on NEXT
-
Select [lokasi] as study extent. Then click on NEXT…

-
Select Square, then click on NEXT…

-
Fill the area or edge.

In this example, we fill 500 x 500 meters as the siz (25 ha ~ 250.000 m2)
We mas set the rotation to 30o
Click OK to execute the function
-
Determine the output (shapefile, or GDB), and click OK to execute the function.
-
After the function performed. Just click on EXIT.
-
Here are the result example

To eliminate unwanted shapes, we may need clip or select by location.
Case 2: Sistematic Circle Survey Design
-
In this case, we will do a systematic sampling with circle plot shape (1 ha ~ 10.000 m2 each plot). The distances between plot are 500m with square constellation.
-
Run step 2 – 4 (on Case 1 above)
-
Select Circle (SQUARE PATTERN)

-
Fill the parameter

Fill 1 Ha (1000 m2)
Spacing between circle centers 500m
Click OK
-
Determine the output file (shapefile, or geodatabase), and Clik OK to execute the function.
-
After the function is executed, just click on EXIT.
-
Here is the result.

To eliminate unwanted shapes, we may need clip or select by location.
We can do some plot shape variation such as point, circle, square, triangle, and hexagon.
This tutorial is performed using Repeating Shape for ArcGIS 9.3, but installed on ArcGIS 10. You may install Repeating Shape for ArcGIS 10 if you wish.
