Download ASTER G-DEM
“ASTER GDEM distribution started on June 29, 2009” that was the main highlight in some GIS blogs. ASTER GDEM was produced using ASTER data acquired from the start of observation to the end of August, 2008 in cooperation with the Japan-US ASTER Science Team. ASTER GDEM is now released and its distribution started, after the validation and the distribution site design.
These are steps to download ASTER GDEM
- Registration here
- Login
- Click on SEARCH
- Choose selection methods: Select tiles directly; by polygon; by shapefile; and by coordinate. After we make a selection, tiles which has been selected will be shown on the map. Just Click on Next.
- Tile list will be shown, just Click on Next
- Select the purpose of the download and we have to agree the term.
- Download the file we select.
If the server is extremely busy, just visit the download page next time

NASA just does not make it easy for people. If you wanted to use the SRTM data, you just opened up an FTP connection and got the tiles you needed. So many hoops here and only 100 tiles at a time! If only they can get with the times and just make a torrent. This way they don’t have to keep worrying about server issues.
The easiest way is using FTP.

Hasil download terdiri dari 2 file / tile, yaitu ….._num.tif dan ….._dem.tif Mohon penjelasan lebih lanjut perbedaan atau kegunaan dari masing-masing file tsb? Yang saya tahu, kedua file tsb memberikan hasil yang berbeda saat digunakan untuk membuat garis kontur (dengan proses yang sama).

_num.tif adalah file QA (Quality Assessment) yang menerangkan file DEM. File QA ditujukan untuk menginformasikan jumlah scene DEM yang digunakan untuk membuat GDEM atau sumber pengisi anomali.
- Kalau nilai QA positif, misal 1, 2, 3, dsb berarti menunjukan jumlah scene yang digunakan untuk membuat DEM
- Kalau nilai QA negatif berarti nilai-nilai pixel tersebut diisi dari sumber DEM yang lain. Indexnya dapat dilihat di file README. Misalnya kalau -1 berarti data diambil dari SRTM V3, -2 berarti data diambil dari SRTM V2, dsb.
