This is an alternative how to download ASTER GDEM via FTP. It is much faster and based on my experience, there is no error page like http://www.gdem.aster.ersdac.or.jp.
“ASTER GDEM distribution started on June 29, 2009” that was the main highlight in some GIS blogs. ASTER GDEM was produced using ASTER data acquired from the start of observation to the end of August, 2008 in cooperation with the Japan-US ASTER Science Team. ASTER GDEM is now released and its distribution started, after the validation and the distribution site design.
Choose selection methods: Select tiles directly; by polygon; by shapefile; and by coordinate. After we make a selection, tiles which has been selected will be shown on the map. Just Click on Next.
Tile list will be shown, just Click on Next
Select the purpose of the download and we have to agree the term.
Download the file we select.
If the server is extremely busy, just visit the download page next time
